A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners and Guests:

One of my personal goals has been to broaden our realization as a Parish Family concerning our involvement with others.  At times, Parishes can become quite literally too “parochial” in their thinking, worrying only about themselves and their immediate concerns.  I believe that the more universal and generous we are in our outlook, the better chance we have of accomplishing our true purpose of bringing about the Kingdom of God among us.

Last week, Dr. Tom Fitzsimmons gave a wonderful reflection on the subject of Endowments and the capacity that we all have to look toward and prepare for a future by establishing funds that will keep on giving after we depart from this earth.  He suggested that you as members of the Parish consider “tithing in death” by remembering Blessed Sacrament in your will.  If you contribute to or start an Endowment Fund in the Catholic Foundation of Columbus, you can be part of supporting the Parish even after God calls you home.

It was my privilege to deliver a check in the amount of $334,150.65 from the estate of Norbert Rubeck to the Catholic Foundation this past week.  This gift speaks to the generosity of one man who lived very frugally all his life, who was grateful to the Parish for the generosity shown to him and his family.

This week, we also hear a call to see our involvement in the needs of the Diocese of Columbus, beyond the borders of our Parish, in the Bishop’s Annual Appeal.  You heard my invitation last year to reach our goal in pledges.   (As of April 22, we have paid 91.7% of the amount pledged for B.A.A. 2007.)  I am asking you once again to acknowledge our common responsibility to our brothers and sisters in the Diocese of Columbus.  Our goal this year is $44,771.

Last year, one third of our Parish households made a pledge.  Could we increase that number?  If you made a pledge last year, I thank you and invite you to do so again.  If you did not make a pledge last year, would you join us in showing the Bishop of Columbus that we are willing to look beyond our own needs and to cooperate with the mission of the whole Diocese?

Along with this concern for “material” commitment, I invite you again to the “spiritual” donation that will allow you to thrive in the Life of the Spirit.  Bring your family to share in our May Crowning at Noon this Sunday.  Pray for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit in a “New Pentecost” on our nation.  Plan to give Jesus some time in adoration in the Blessed Sacrament.   Be ready to celebrate our Parish Feast of Corpus Christi at the end of the month.

2008 Bishop’s Annual Appeal Prayer

Father, in the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Your Son, we are joined to the Christ of the Cross and the Christ of Glory.  May the good works that we do and the sacrifices we make draw others into the great mystery of Your love for them.  For those in need, we truly are the presence of that love.  Grant us the courage and goodness to share this mystery.  We ask this through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

DID YOU KNOW that the Ascension is the Mystery of God’s taking our humanity into the very Life of the Trinity?  Through Jesus, we are one with God.  Our human nature is capable of living Divine Life.  Setting our sights on what is in store for us, we are able to live more fully committed to what God’s Spirit is accomplishing in our world.  The Mystery of the Ascension serves to complete the “bridge” between Heaven and Earth, and Earth and Heaven.  The Word became flesh and “pitched His tent among us.”  Then, He took our “tent” into the Eternal Temple and gave us a place in God.

May our minds and hearts be raised to what is above that our life here below may reach the heights to which we are called in Jesus Christ.

Secrets of the Life of the Spirit

The devotion Catholics have for the Blessed Virgin Mary is a means of grace that enables us to see what God has in store for all who are willing to cooperate with Him.  Mary is God’s own creation, and she is the one member of the human race who allowed God’s grace to bring her to the full reality God intended for us.

When we experience devotion to Mary, we are opening our spirits to the grace that operates through her in her Son.  There is a “place” that a mother has in her heart for each of her children that is all their own.  By drawing close to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we discover the path to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  Mary prays with us and for us, seeking the graces we need to be who her Son calls us to be.

Choose Life… In a desperate attempt at rationalizing their support for abortion, some clergy in Schenectady, NY, held a ceremony to bless an abortion clinic as “sacred ground.” Pointing out the hypocrisy in this, Kathleen Gallagher of the New York Catholic Conference, said “For many years abortion proponents have been saying this is not a religious issue, you should keep religion out of this, now all of a sudden they turn around and decide to bless an abortion clinic to gain respect for a procedure everybody knows is not worthy of respect.” Albany Times Union
