A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners:

Today we celebrate an “Investiture” for our Second Graders as a step on their way to their First Holy Communion.  This little ceremony is a reminder to all of us of the need to pray for our young people as they learn about the Sacraments of our Faith.  We are a Family who have the responsibility to grow in the ways of Faith together.

I have often said that for us at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, there are truly three “Patronal Feast Days”: First is the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, which will be celebrated on May 25 this year.  Second is Holy Thursday, the night our Lord instituted the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper (March 20 this year).  The Third is First Communion Sunday, which will be April 6, the Third Sunday of Easter.  Each of these Feasts celebrates something special about our Parish Namesake, the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.

Our Past, where we have come from is evident in the Last Supper, where Jesus poured Himself out for us as the sustaining Food of Eternal Life.  Our Present in the Reality of the Body and Blood of Christ as we live and celebrate the Eucharist as a Parish Family.  Our Future is our children, who learn from us the Truth of Faith, both by word and by example.

I invite you to renew your own Faith in the Eucharist.  Reflect on the Gift you receive when you come forward to the Altar.  Open your heart to the transformation that He asks of you, renouncing Sin and opening to the Grace through which He dwells in us as His own Temple.

We are the People of God who have the wonderful Name, the Church of the Blessed Sacrament.  Let us live up to our name and let our life together be truly a sign that God is with us.

Communion Prayer

My Lord Jesus Christ,

I firmly believe

that I am about to receive, in Communion,

Your Body, Your Blood,

Your Soul and Your divinity.

I believe it because You have said it,

and I am ready to give my life

to maintain this truth.

Our Lenten journey has begun.  Catholic Relief Services invites you to make this journey in solidarity with your global family, and Operation Rice Bowl makes this easy and enriching.  It is a journey of prayer, fasting, learning and giving, all with an international flavor.  To be Catholic means to be linked not just to our local communities, but also to our global community.  Last year, the $8 million offered by participants in Operation Rice Bowl made a huge difference to people all around the world.  Your participation in Operation Rice Bowl during this Lenten season challenges you to expand your own horizons.  You will be provoked to alleviate suffering and combat injustice.  Together, we can induce tremendous change: “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they can be satisfied.”

DID YOU KNOW that we are called to join in Christ’s own Sacrifice without measure?  We are not able to commit ourselves fully with out first Counting the Cost of Discipleship.  Jesus’ own Sacrifice on our behalf was an outpouring of His entire Being.  When we cooperate with Him, there can be no half measures.  We’re either “all in” or we do not really enter into the full truth of our Life in Christ.

The Cost that we pay, of course, is nothing when compared with the Price He has already paid.  Nor is it anything when compared with the “Benefit” that comes to us when we throw in our lot with the Lord: the Salvation He won for us and the Gift of Eternal Life.

One’s Vocation is only lived truly when it is accepted fully.  We are called to make a commitment to God without any reserve.  The Spirit helps us, but the choice is ours.  Have you taken time to count the cost?  Are you ready to pay when your account is due?
