A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners:

Today I celebrate my 23rd Anniversary of Ordination to the Priesthood.  I am truly in awe of what God has accomplished in me and with me through these years.  As I enter my 24th year, heading in a new direction, I just want to say thank you for all that you have been for me.  Do you realize that I have been with you for more than half my priesthood?  12 years and six months with you have taught me so much about God’s ways and in particular, His way in me.  Whatever else I may do in the years ahead, know that you have played a great part in shaping me as Pastor and as priest.

As most grownups have figured out, school does not really teach you all you need to know to do the work you end up doing. Rather, most learning really comes about from on the job training.  You have been my teachers and trainers.  I am better able to see what God can do when folks choose to work with Him.

In these years at Blessed Sacrament and through my years of priestly ministry, I have certainly experienced difficulties.  That is part of life.  None of us is perfect.  For any of my failings that you feel have harmed you, I am truly sorry.  I trust that the Good Shepherd will provide the healing we need to move forward with no regrets.

When I was in the seminary, a priest who knew me once told me that I was born for priesthood.  It rings true.  All that has happened in my life, the joys and the struggles, convince me that it is true.  Now that I am preparing to proclaim the Gospel in another location, I look forward to a new season of learning and growth.  I trust that you will experience that too.

Please pray for me and for all priests.  Know that you are in my heart and in my prayers always.

And, one more thing: as a special favor, please invite your children and grandchildren to think very seriously about following the Lord’s call in their lives by considering priesthood or religious life, public ministry in the Catholic Church.  I guarantee you: they will be happier in their lives whatever they decide if they have considered all the possibilities.  Be sure they consider those possibilities that no one else will tell them about.  Tell them why you think the Church would be lucky to see them in the role of priest or sister or religious brother.  Tell them what you have received from those who have lived such a life.  Tell them that they will be happiest doing whatever they do in response to God’s Call.

Jesus

I need Thee, precious Jesus,

I need a friend like Thee;

A friend to soothe and sympathize,

A friend to care for me.

I need Thy Heart, sweet Jesus,

To feel each anxious care;

I long to tell my every want,

And all my sorrows share.

I need Thy Blood, sweet Jesus,

To wash each sinful stain;

To cleanse this sinful soul of mine

And make it pure again.

I need Thy Wounds, sweet Jesus,

To fly from perils near.

To shelter in their hallowed clefts,

From every doubt and fear.

I need Thee, sweetest Jesus,

In Thy Sacrament of Love;

To nourish this poor soul of mine,

With the treasures of Thy love.

I’ll need Thee, precious Jesus,

When death’s dread hour draws nigh,

To hide me in Thy Sacred Heart,

‘Till wafted safe on high.

 (COLUMN 3)

DID YOU KNOW that being concerned for “the Things of the Lord” is the earthly equivalent of preparation for Heaven?  When a Christian chooses to devote his or her life to the Lord wholeheartedly, there is a new way of thinking that develops that puts God first in priority.

We don’t think, “I cannot go to Mass because it is the only day I can sleep in.”  Rather, we think, “I need to get some rest so I will be able to give God my best on Sunday morning.”

We don’t think, “I cannot contribute my time, talent, treasure to what the Church is asking because I have other needs.”  Rather, we think, “I give to God first, and then I trust Him to provide for all my other needs; if He does not provide something I think I need, then I really don’t need it.”

Our thoughts are measured by God’s thoughts, not the other way around.  We seek to please God instead of ourselves or other human beings.

St. Paul suggests that it may be easier for the unmarried person to attend to “the Things of the Lord.”  But it is also true that all, married and single, in every life, are called to seek the “one Thing necessary.”  We are all called to holiness of life and to a living relationship with the Lord.
