A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners and Guests:

We have reached our final full month together.  Reviewing the weekend Schedule, I see that I have only four weekends when I will be the homilist, so I want to make them count.  Here is the plan I have mapped out:

This weekend, May 31/June 1, I want to give a general perspective on Life’s Journey.  My hope is to share with you highlights of my own journey, and what I think have been significant moments in our life together.

Next weekend Deacon Bob will be homilist and we have our Missionary Appeal.

June 14-15, Father’s Day weekend, will be a rather serious conversation.  Call it “A Frank Talk with Dad.”  I hope to share with you some “truths” that I feel have to be said before I head out of town.  Consider it “the talk” that your father should give you before you head out into the world, only this time you are staying and Father is heading to new responsibilities.

June 22 will be my 23rd Anniversary of Priestly Ordination, so I want to share with you that weekend the story of my vocation one last time.  I want to try to offer you some insight into how God calls so you and your children will be better able to discern and respond to God’s call.  It is my sincere hope someday in the not too distant future to participate in the ordination of someone from Blessed Sacrament.  We are “due” to give a vocation to the priesthood in the Diocese of Columbus.  I would also like to be invited to the religious profession of any who are called to the vowed life.  It is time we return the favor to the various religious women and men who have served in our parish.

June 28-29 will be Deacon Patrick’s weekend to preach.

Then, July 5-6 weekend will be my farewell to Newark Blessed Sacrament.  We’ll see what the Holy Spirit inspires for that weekend’s round of Masses.  My last Mass here will be Tuesday, July 8, at 8:15 a.m.  That day, I will celebrate Mass, pack up any leftover items that I need to take, and find my way to St. Timothy Parish in Columbus.

I realize that many of you will be starting your summer vacations.  I do hope to see you before it is time to leave.  In any case, let’s live these final days together to the fullest.

My Lord God,
I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself,
and the fact that I think that I am following your will
does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you
does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road
though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore will I trust you always
though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.

DID YOU KNOW that Celibacy for the sake of the Kingdom is a personal invitation from Jesus to a soul to anticipate on earth the experience that will belong to everyone in Heaven?

This call can come to us in a variety of ways.  For some, it is part of their call to the vowed life.  In following the charism of a particular religious community, women and men respond to an invitation to live celibate chastity along with poverty and obedience and perhaps other vows or promises.  They are a sign to all of total self-giving to the Lord and His Church.  For some, the celibacy they are called to comes as part of their response to the Church’s discipline for those who receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders.  Transitional Deacons and Priests in the Latin Rite, and Bishops in both the Eastern and Latin Churches live celibacy as a sign of their “marriage” to the People of God.

For most who are called to live celibate chastity, the call comes by way of Providence, as a practical consequence of their state in life and their call to Holiness and moral virtue that is addressed to them through Baptism.  All who are single, never married, are called to this form of chastity.  Widowed persons, those who are divorced, and those whose spouses are ill or away from their common life, are all called to this chastity as a consequence of fidelity in Marriage.

The whole Christian community, and indeed all human persons, are called to live for God first.  The world has a different vision.  But this world is passing.  Celibacy points to the Kingdom that lasts forever.

News about our New Pastor, Fr. Jonathan Wilson

Father Wilson (as he prefers to be called) came to visit the Parish and School this past week.  He is very excited about coming to Blessed Sacrament, which will be his first Pastorate.  He has had two assignments since his ordination to the priesthood as Associate Pastor: St. Mary’s in Lancaster (with Father Don Franks, who hails from Newark) and the Perry County Consortium, living at St. Rose in New Lexington (with Father James Cszasar, whose sister Jodie Snider and her family are members of Blessed Sacrament).

Drawn Deeper: Journaling into Spirituality and Prayer presented by Mary van Balen-Holt on Saturday, June 21st, 10am -3pm at the Martin De Pores Center, 2330 Airport Dr., Cols.

Everyone experiences God in the present, not in the past or future.  Although this truth is commonly accepted, being attentive to the moment is difficult.  This workshop will engage participants in a variety of journaling exercises that will help them become more present to the moment and therefore more responsive to the Divine Relationship that is offered in it.  Using the journal as a writer’s notebook to become awake to the extraordinary in everyday life, using a jeweler’s loupe to look closely, and sketching to focus are some approaches that will be used.  Participants are asked to bring journals.

Mary van Balen-Holt, MA, is the author of four books, articles for magazines and her column is published in The Catholic Times.  Mary is an adjunct instructor of theology at Ohio Dominican University as well as program director an elementary afterschool program.  A speaker & leader of retreats and days of reflection, she enjoys sharing her longtime practice of journaling.

2008 Catholic Home Missions Appeal

Sharing One Faith: Catholic Missions of America

Today’s special collection is the Catholic Home Missions Appeal.  This Appeal supports the Home Missions – places in he United States where the Catholic Church struggles just to keep parishes open and to educate children in the faith.  Some dioceses are terribly short of priests, sisters, and the money needed to run parishes.  For example, there are only 70 priests in the whole state of Utah, 57 in Idaho, and 45 in Wyoming.  Please give generously to help your fellow Catholics here in America.
