A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners:

I remember very well the first Epiphany I celebrated with you here at Blessed Sacrament.  It was my first weekend as your Pastor.  It was a cold, snowy season, and I think there were some who ventured out only because they were curious to see who the new Pastor was.

All the ordinary meetings during the week before had been canceled due to the weather.  I was impressed when I realized that without my asking, the choir sang all the verses of “We Three Kings,” thus giving our Lord all the gifts to which He was entitled on that Feast.  You would be surprised how many parishes just end after two verses no matter what story the song is meant to tell!  I always ask for “We Three Kings” to be completed when that happens.

Epiphany is a call to Unity and an invitation to live God’s Plan for our world.  God is made manifest in our human nature.  The Magi reveal that God is for all.  The Baptism of the Lord shows that Jesus is the Beloved Son and that our human nature has been made capable of bearing the Spirit.  The Wedding Feast of Cana reminds us that glory is made present in human situations if we only have the eyes to see.

The Church in Jerusalem Epiphany Prayer

O God,
Who by a star
guided the wise men to the worship of your Son,
we pray You to lead to Yourself
the wise and great of every land
that unto you every knee may bow,
and every thought be brought into captivity.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

DID YOU KNOW that planning for the future is a capacity that is unique to human beings?  It is true that some animals follow instincts to prepare for winter by storing up food or by building hideaways that are weather proofed.  But that is not real planning.  Only human beings look toward a future that is truly prepared.

God has planned for our future not only in this life, but also in the life to come, when we go from this world into Eternity.  Some job choices and life styles are primarily concerned with life in this world only.  A Vocation is directed toward our future with God.  All human beings have a call that comes from God to share His Life.  Some are invited to share in the task of proclaiming the Gospel to their fellow human beings.

Are you looking toward the future with a sense of Hope?  Are you opening your mind and heart to the possibility of shaping your life choices by way of your Vocation?  Are you encouraging others, especially the young, to listen for the voice of God speaking in their hearts?

What we have learned together: God is with us, even in the smallest details of our lives.  When we are willing to work with His grace, we begin to discover that He has truly prepared us for whatever happens.  He understands our human nature, and He delights in throwing us together in order for us to learn more of Who He Is.

The Marriage and Family Life Office asks you to consider what theologian Jack Shea says, that we don’t see the world as it is – we see the world as we are. If we hold an inner idea about life’s grimness, hurt, and pain, that’s what we’ll find. If we hold an inner idea about life’s grace, benevolence, and joy, that, too, is what we’ll discover. Sometimes in order to make spiritual progress we need to let go of our old notions of how life is supposed to be, and instead see life with God’s eyes. What better time than the start of a New Year to align our inner sight with God’s, in order to discover joy, notice grace, and be open to life’s benevolence?
