A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners:

The Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord is a good day to recall the gift of the Sacrament Baptism in your life.  If you know the date of your Baptism and recall it every year, congratulations!  You have begun to realize just how important that day is for you.  If you don’t know the date of your Baptism, why not make it a point to find out.  You probably have a copy of the certificate around somewhere.  If not, it ought to be recorded at the church where it took place.  Take the time to discover this for yourself.

If you have children who have been baptized, you ought to have a special file where you keep such documentation.  It is also a good idea to have it noted down in a separate place just in case that file is lost.  Do you have a family Bible with a place for those details?  Make sure it is up to date.

Birthdays, Wedding Anniversaries, and other such dates are important to us because of the relationships they call to mind.  How much more important the Sacrament that brought about your experience of the Life you will be living forever!

A Prayer of Consecration for Renewal of Baptismal Vows

Most Merciful and Loving Father, for the sake of my own salvation and for the good of all Your People, I now renew the Consecration made on the day of my Baptism.  Aware of being accepted by You as Your own beloved child, through Your Son Jesus Christ, I give thanks that through Your mercy we are given this gift of New Birth.

Acknowledging the ministry you have shared with me in Christ, I consecrate myself to You, uniting my heart, my mind, my soul and my strength to the very life You share in the Most Blessed Trinity with Your Son and the Holy Spirit.  Entrusting this pledge of my commitment to Mary, the Mother of Your Son, who now shares with You the Light of Glory, I implore You for an outpouring of Your Holy Spirit.  May Your Divine Mercy be manifest in my life.  May the Truth of Your Love be made known through all my choices and actions.

Empowered by Your Spirit, in communion with all the Saints, I promise to live this Consecration each day of my life that the Grace of the Incarnation may be shown forth in me.  I give You all I am, all I have and all I do from this day forward until You call me to enter into my eternal home with You.  May the work You have begun in me continue until I reach the fullness of the Humanity of Jesus, Your Son.   May Your Spirit breathe new life into me that I may come to Union with You now and forever.

Amen.

DID YOU KNOW that Hopes and Dreams are the fruit of imagination and the longings of our hearts?  When we dare to look toward the future with confidence in God’s Love for us, we are able to set in motion new experiences and a deeper way of living.  A Vocation is a Call that comes from God from deep within the heart of each human being.  That Vocation takes shape by the conscious act of hoping and dreaming what it can be.

A young woman who dreams of a beautiful Wedding and about a dress and a cake is expressing this human capacity.  A young man who considers priesthood or religious life and “plays Mass” at a homemade altar is opening to a sense of wonder at what God can do with a life given over to His grace.  Parents’ dreams for their children, if they are open to discovery and unplanned directions, can free them to teach the little ones entrusted to them about God’s Call.  Such dreams can also make us appreciate the ways of God’s Providence as He guides us through our lives.

We ought to have deep Dreams and high Hopes, because Eternity beckons us onward into a relationship with God that will never end.  What are your Hopes and Dreams for the world?  Who knows about them?

What we have learned together: It is a good idea to sing all the verses of a hymn so you get the whole story.  We may also be able to draw others who do not usually sing into the song if we keep it going long enough.  When I arrived at Blessed Sacrament, I thought you already had the custom of singing all the verses because the Three Kings of Orient actually gave all their gifts to the Christ Child the very first weekend that I was here.  I have just recently (after 12 years!) found out that it only became a local custom the first weekend I was here.  How wonderful!  We actually made something new happen the first time we met that has lasted a dozen years. . . .

JOIN in the worldwide mission of Jesus!

(clip art) By our Baptism, we are all missionaries—called to share our faith in Jesus Christ with our family and friends, with our neighbors, indeed, with the whole world.

Next Sunday, we are invited to make a special commitment as missionaries.  We are  invited to join in the worldwide mission of Jesus by joining the Propagation of the Faith.

In making this commitment, we pledge to…

U PRAY daily for the missionary work of the Church, offering our personal crosses for missionaries and those they serve.

U OFFER REGULAR FINANCIAL HELP in support of those who bring the “Good News” of Jesus to our brothers and sisters throughout the Missions.

Please say “yes” to this special missionary call next weekend.

Choose Life… ‘The Old and New Testaments are filled with…passages extolling children as a gift and blessing.  It is disheartening, therefore, to see how far our culture has diverged from that view.  …There was no confusion [in the story of Mary and Elizabeth] as to what and who nested under their mothers’ hearts.  Yet 2,000 years later, many well-educated people do not know-or claim they do not know-the truth about human life before birth.” Cardinal Justin Rigali of Philadelphia, Southern Cross, 10/11/07
