A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners:

How is your Lent going?  This weekend, we are invited to encounter Jesus as He stops for a drink at the well of our lives.  Are we willing to satisfy His thirst?  Can we allow Him to make known to us what we must know so we can accept His gift of salvation?

Many families are experiencing health concerns at a new depth.  Calls about surgeries and hospital visits, new residents in nursing home facilities, and illnesses that are life-threatening seem to have increased lately.  Know that you are always in our prayers.  Be sure that the Lord in His Mercy will be with you to face whatever comes.

We want to remind all our parishioners to give a call to the Parish Office to let us know what is happening if anyone in your family goes to the hospital or has to face any kind of an operation.  We don’t always hear from the hospital that a parishioner has been admitted.  We want to pray with you and for you during the times you face difficulties.  If it is not possible for anyone on the Parish Staff to visit, we generally try to contact Pastoral Care departments to ensure the availability of the Sacraments.

Act of Contrition

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart.
In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good,
I have sinned against You
Whom I should love above all things.
I firmly intend, with Your help,
to do penance, to sin no more,

and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us.
In His Name, my God, have mercy.

Amen.

What is Operation Rice Bowl?

Operation Rice Bowl is the Lenten solidarity program of Catholic Relief Services.  Just as we celebrate the Eucharist on Sundays, we can use Operation Rice Bowl throughout Lent as a way to “break bread” together with family and loved ones.  We join in the traditional practices of Lent and pray as a community, fast in solidarity with those who are hungry, give concrete assistance to those most in need, while we learn about the joys and challenges in the lives of our brothers and sisters around the world.  Cardboard rice bowls are available at all doors of our church and in the vestibule for you to take and fill for our brothers and sisters in need.  Help support Operation Rice Bowl.

DID YOU KNOW that the Spirit helps us in our weakness?

Often, we may feel very weak and others tell us how strong we seem to them.  This is a sign that God is present and working through us beyond our capacity to see.  We must learn to trust in the power of God in the very reality of our weakness.  For this reason, we do not have to be afraid of anything except sin.  Sin is the only thing that can hold us back from God, and that is so only if we are unwilling to admit our weakness.  When we admit our weakness, our sins and failings, God can forgive us and free us.

God generously pours out His Spirit on all hearts that are open to receive this Gift.  The Spirit helps us in our weakness.  Come, Holy Spirit!

wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

What we have learned together:  When many people choose to work together on a project, it builds up the community.  We accomplish more and have more fun when something we do is not the exclusive domain of one individual or group.  This requires better communication and greater flexibility to be sure, but it also serves to witness a more inviting and welcoming spirit.

Next week our parish will take up The Catholic Relief Services Collection.

This Collection makes possible the mission of the Catholic Church to combat poverty, provide relief and development, assist refugees and immigrants, and advocate for justice and peace in situations of conflict and neglect of basic human rights throughout the world.

Please help by giving to the Collection next Sunday.

The theme for The Catholic Relief Services Collection in 2008 is Jesus in disguise.

Who Is Jesus in disguise?

·    One of the 43,000 people who die of hunger and its consequences every day.

·    One of the 4.4 billion people living in developing countries where

·    Basic sanitation is often lacking.

·    Safe drinking water is scarce.

·    Adequate housing is a challenge.

·    Modern health services are almost non-existent.

·    Education beyond a fifth-grade level is rarely available for the majority of people.

·    One of the estimated 35 million refugees and displaced persons living in often dangerous and squalid conditions without the hope of returning home

·    One of the 400,000 people assisted by the Church who seek asylum and other legal immigration services each year

Please help by giving to The Catholic Relief Services Collection.
