A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners:

Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, confronted human sin.  Sinless Himself, He met the Tempter and showed us that our human nature can prevail, when we rely on the grace of God that is available to us.

This Lent, I am inviting all of us to look deeply into the Mystery of Sin.  In my life as a priest, I have learned many things that I want to try to share about the truth of sin.  It is my desire to offer the Wisdom of the Church in such a way that you will have tools in your “arsenal” against sin and that you will have enough familiarity with them to use them to overcome real sin.

Sin is subtle.  It sneaks in.  I hope to bring it into the light.  Please listen to me with the awareness that the Tempter will do his best to distort what I have to say.  Sin is a lie.  The father of lies stirs up sin so as to keep us from the unity that Grace offers.

Why am I doing this now?  I feel prompted by the Spirit to live Lent and Easter intensely, and to try to share with you many things that I feel I have not been able to share in years past due to other distractions.  This is a time of special grace.  Please pray with me and for me as I strive to speak deep and hard truths.  Please trust me.  Open your heart to receive what I offer now.  I give it because I want you to know freedom from sin and the wonderful Gift of the Life of Grace.

Prayer to Achieve Inner Peace

Slow me down, Lord.

Ease the pounding of my heart by the quieting of my mind.  Steady my hurried pace with a vision of the eternal reach of time.  Give me, amid the confusion of the day, the calmness of the everlasting hills.  Break the tension of my nerves and muscles with the soothing music of the singing streams that live in memory.

Help me to know the magical, restoring power of sleep.  Teach me the art of taking minute vacations— of slowing down to look at a flower, to chat with a friend, to pat a dog, to read a few lines from The Good Book.

Slow me down, Lord.

“Support United States Black, Indian, Eskimo and Aleute Missions” The annual appeal is a vital part of the Church of the Year 2008.  The Funds are needed to continue present Evangelization programs; even more, to continue to assist those parishes devastated by hurricanes to totally rebuild their programs.  Many places, lost everything and how soon we forget the rebuilding that needs to be done cannot be done overnight.  The evangelization programs torn apart by the devastation need to be woven back together.  It will take years.  Many new evangelization efforts are being made in these areas as well as the other Black, Indian, Eskimo and Aleute communities assisted by the Church’s National Black and Indian Collection…Working together leads to success.  This weekend the Church is asking your support of the National Collection for Black and Indian Missions in the United States.  The need for Evangelization programs is so important to our Church in this changing world.  Please be generous.  Thank you for whatever you can give and God bless you.

DID YOU KNOW that that accomplishment of God’s Will requires a simple willingness to be?  We cannot answer God’s Call in our lives unless we are in touch with being.  God IS.  His Call to us is expressed not in doing, but in Being.  To enter into a real relationship with God is to be with Him.  Jesus is our Emmanuel—God with us.  God gives us our reason to be.  When we seek to live in accord with God’s Plan, we must make a choice to apply His Prior Right in our lives.

God said, “Let there be light.”  The act of Creation is an act of bringing into being from nothingness.  Human life is an invitation to the fullness of Being in relationship with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

What we have learned together: Flexibility is the quality that is most necessary for true freedom to minister in the name of the Church.  We have to be ready to respond to the needs of those around us and to the promptings of the Spirit in the accomplishment of God’s Will in our lives.  If an individual is unable to be flexible, ministry will become a constant source of frustration.  Your way is not the only way.  If you think there is only one way to do something, think again!
