A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners and Guests:

Some of you heard from me last weekend at the Saturday vigil Mass, or at daily Mass about my trip to Washington, D.C., for the Mass with Pope Benedict XVI.  I want to share a couple of points with all of you in this column.

“Before all else, I thank God for the blessing of being in your midst,” our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI said at the beginning of his homily at Nationals Stadium in Washington, D.C., and your Pastor was there to hear it.  What a privilege!  It was so obvious that the Pope was delighted to be with us.  He expressed joy and it was evident in his smile and in his eyes.  Truly, he showed himself to be a loving shepherd.

Words of comfort, words of truth and words of challenge were spoken.  Pope Benedict asked: “Who can deny that the present moment is a crossroads, not only for the Church in America but also for society as a whole? It is a time of great promise, as we see the human family in many ways drawing closer together and becoming ever more interdependent. Yet at the same time we see clear signs of a disturbing breakdown in the very foundations of society: signs of alienation, anger and polarization on the part of many of our contemporaries; increased violence; a weakening of the moral sense; a coarsening of social relations; and a growing forgetfulness of God.”

He called for mutual love among us.  “Today I encourage each of you to do what you can to foster healing and reconciliation, and to assist those who have been hurt. Also, I ask you to love your priests, and to affirm them in the excellent work that they do. And above all, pray that the Holy Spirit will pour out his gifts upon the Church, the gifts that lead to conversion, forgiveness and growth in holiness.”

He also called for a renewal of Sacramental practice, especially with use of the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

So many images remain from the Pope’s various stops along his journey.  May we open our hearts to understand God’s invitation extended to us through him.  May our nation grow in the ways of justice and peace.

Prayer for the Holy Father

Lord, source of eternal life and truth,
give to Your shepherd, Pope Benedict,
a spirit of courage and right judgment,
a spirit of knowledge and love.

By governing with fidelity those entrusted to

his care, may he, as successor to the apostle

Peter and Vicar of Christ, build Your Church

into a sacrament of unity, love, and peace

for all the world.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,

Your Son, who lives and reigns with You

and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and

ever. Amen.

My Dear Fr. Hayes,

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you most sincerely for the Parish Mission I was privileged to lead in your parish this winter.  With a new book, CALLED – AT HOME ON THE ROAD! Coming out this winter and with my normal busy mission schedule besides, I’ve gotten somewhat behind in my correspondence.  Please thank your dear parishioners for their kind generosity in the mission offering which was sent to us, a mission offering that truly makes my work possible and fruitful.  And please thank them also, Father, for their prayerful support which keeps me truly “At home on the road!”  Be assured of my daily prayer for you and all your parishioners and their special intentions.

May God bless you and your parishioners and keep you all close to His loving heart.

Gratefully yours in Christ,

Father Patrick “Pat” Martin

DID YOU KNOW that the Call of the Lord is addressed personally to each of us?  All of us together make up the Body of Christ.  No ministry or individual “has it all.”  It is only when we work together, united through trust, stability and interdependence, that we can hope to accomplish God’s purpose in our lives.

The Lord has a plan.  We are all part of that plan.  Those for whom He has chosen a path, He calls to fulfill their purpose.  Are you responding to your call?

Secrets of the Life of the Spirit

The Sacraments are means of grace.  Each Sacrament offers us a living encounter with Jesus Christ.  When we ignore any of the Sacraments that are available to us, we miss out on graces that God has set aside for our use.  Growth in the life of the Spirit happens more swiftly when we practice our Faith through participation in the Sacramental life.

Choose Life… Abortion is a procedure important to the process of in vitro fertilization, since “fetal reduction” is routinely used.  Moreover, embryos are often destroyed in order to choose the most viable embryo for implantation into the woman’s womb.  Further, “left-over” embryos are often looked upon as resources for scientific research, rather than as human beings at the beginning of their life who should never be objects of research done not for their benefit but for someone else’s.  Richard Doerflinger, Associate Director of the U.S. Catholic Bishops’ Pro-Life Secretariat, commented that “one would have to call the IVF procedure a fairly efficient method of abortion, with a 95-96% success rate.
