A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners:

My home parish as an elementary school student from grades 2-8 was St. Gabriel Parish in Columbus.  My siblings and I also attended St. Gabriel School.  For many of those years, our Pastor was Father William Patterson.  I attended the funeral Mass for Father Patterson this past week at the Church of the Holy Redeemer in Portsmouth.  Bishop James Griffin was the presider and Fr. Dwayne McNew gave the homily.  It was a wonderful tribute to a good and holy priest.

Fr. Patterson and servers at St. Gabriel

Since I first heard about his death last week, I have been thinking about my years at St. Gabriel and all the things I learned from Father Patterson.  He was a true witness of devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and of being a sign of God’s concern for His People, especially His children.  Interest in family life and in practice of Faith as a family were also hallmarks of his approach to priestly ministry.  He kept in touch with many people, often just showing up on the doorstep in his famous green truck.

I once told Father Patterson that one reason I worked so diligently for our new school building at Blessed Sacrament was his witness in efforts to save St. Gabriel School when it was being forced to close in the late 1970’s.  I could see that if we did not plan for a future, we would not have one.  My prayer is that our efforts will continue to provide Catholic education in this Parish for many years to come.

As I join my family and all the friends of Father Patterson in saying farewell, I invite you to gather your own memories of the priests and religious and others who have made a difference in your life.

Father Patterson told me as I was beginning my studies for the priesthood to remember that “priesthood is for your whole life.”  He lived his whole life as a faithful priest.  That gives me hope that I may do that also.  I invite our children to listen to the voice of God as He calls some of them to priesthood and religious life.

Father Patterson’s Penance was always the same: “Say five Our Father’s and five Hail Mary’s, and please pray for me.”  Will you do this for Father Patterson and for your Pastor?

DID YOU KNOW that families are meant to grow?  God’s desire is that all human beings be included in the family He has established among us through Jesus Christ.  All in the Family means that we cannot ever settle for a small group closed in on itself.  The family of God is all inclusive.  No one is to be left out.  “No child left behind” may be a good motto for the journey to the Kingdom.

There is often a temptation to give up when our invitation to the life of Faith is rejected.  When members of our families cease practicing the Faith or when others reject us do to our own commitment to the teachings of the Church, we can wonder if it is worth the effort.  God has not told us that we will be successful, but He does ask us to keep trying.  Have you invited anyone to the Kingdom recently?

What we have learned together: Celebration of the Mass by those who understand it is a powerful witness of Faith.  When we take time to help one another learn the meaning of the Mass and each element of its celebration, we deepen our own experience of the Mass.  Families who have kept alive the practice of attending Mass together are a sign to everyone of the joy of praying together.  Families whose members are regularly at Mass find the Funeral Mass especially consoling when they mourn the loss of loved ones.

Choose Life…Legislation to legalize assisted suicide would establish “ending life as an appropriate way to relieve suffering.  Once that premise has been established, it becomes logical to extend what is then seen as ‘a legitimate medical treatment’ to the chronically ill, the terminally ill at any stage, individuals in intractable pain and even those who are depressed.” (Dr. Wesley J.
