A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR
Dear
Parishioners:
It’s only the second week of School
and life at Blessed Sacrament is already chaotic. I have the impression that the times are becoming ever more complicated
quickly. Again and again I hear stories
from families about lots of matters for attention that give the impression that
we are being “tested.” How are you
doing on your “test”? No cheating!
As I have told our children many
times, “Homework is forever.” All
grow-ups can attest to the truth that you never get away from homework, even
after you get out of school. The key is
to become efficient at doing the homework first thing. Get it done before you play. Let it prepare you for what tomorrow will
bring.
So also with “tests.” As soon as you pass one test, you can count
on another, more difficult test to come along.
We are all heading for the “final exam.” Every test along the way is designed to be a preparation for this
encounter with our Maker.
One other matter I have noticed: the
stretching that comes from all this “testing” tends to make people rather
“testy.” I invite you to consider these
facts before you choose to let someone on the other end of the phone line or at
the grocery counter have it: Your
passing on of your “testiness” is, in fact a failure to meet the “test.” You may also lead to others’ failure by
passing on your bad day, instead of meeting the test and learning
patience. A little bit of kindness goes
a long way.
If you are the recipient of the
“static” that comes from folks under stress, you can practice a mantra that
keeps you centered. Try this one: “No storm can shake my inmost calm!” Hum it out loud and perhaps your testy
friend can pick up some peace from you instead of ruining your day. If it is a parishioner or fellow school
community member, say, “Fr. Tim told me you might be calling and he said I
should sing you this song. . . .” If
that party has read the bulletin, then you might get a laugh. Or you can both agree that your Pastor is a
bit crazy. Either way, you just might
pass the test this time.
As we take time out of the already
full Fall schedule for Labor Day, let’s resolve to labor together to build
Christ’s Kingdom of Love, no matter how many tests we have to face. Hang in there, and help others to hang in
there with you! We are in this
together.

Prayer for Workers
Glorious
St. Joseph,
model of all who devote their lives to labor,
obtain for me the grace to work in the spirit of penance
in order thereby to atone for my many sins;
to work conscientiously,
setting devotion to duty in preference to my own whims;
to work with thankfulness and joy,
deeming it an honor to employ and to develop by my labor
the gifts I have received from God;
to work with order, peace, moderation, and patience,
without ever shrinking from weariness and difficulties;
to work above all with a pure intention and with detachment
of self, having always before my eyes the hour of death
and the accounting which I must then render of time ill spent,
of talents wasted, of good omitted,
and of vain complacency in success
which is so fatal to the work of God.
All
for Jesus, all through Mary,
all in imitation of you,
O Patriarch Joseph!
This shall be my motto in life and in death.
Amen
Pope Pius X (Partial
indulgence)

Labor Day is September 3rd. As our U.S. Bishops wrote in their document, A Jubilee for Workers: Challenges and Opportunities for the New Millennium: “It is worth remembering on Labor Day…that a person is more valuable for what she or he is than for what they have, for the work they do rather than for what they posses. We must join together…to build a society that respects each person and their work.” The Marriage and Family Life Office encourages you to talk with your children about how work gives them witness to our faith, how each of us can make the world a better place by who we are and what we do, and how all that we do can manifest the love of God. Spend some time reflecting on how you bring holiness and wholeness to the work you do. Lord, let our work be a source of joy to our family and a song of praise to you. Amen

DID YOU KNOW that the Sacrament of
Holy Matrimony establishes a new family on the very day of the wedding? The Bride and Groom, now Husband and Wife,
are a new human family that is meant to be a “Domestic Church.” They bring God to life for others in the way
they express their love for one another and in the way they are open to the
action of grace as it makes them one.
Every family is meant to be a mirror of the Divine Family, the Holy
Trinity. Man, woman and the love they
share together reflect the love of the Spirit, the Son and the Father. Living Marriage as a Sacrament is the call
of every baptized person who enters into marriage.
The familial love shared by spouses is the very source
that brings about the growth of a family with children. It is also the lifeblood of the life that is
shared during the years the children are at home and when the nest is once
again empty. It is necessary to nurture
this love all through the marriage. How
are you working with your spouse to build up the familial love you share?

What we have learned together: Folks grow at different paces. Not all can grasp the need to move forward at the same time. Even those who tend to drag us back have a place in God’s overall plan. Patience can be learned from the most difficult people. Perseverance in the face of nay-sayers can serve to make the achievement more grounded.

Some Good News: The Pro-Life billboard is up on Route 16 heading west. Look for it and know that all who contributed played a part in this display that calls us to acknowledge the gift of life.

The Marriage and Family Life Office reminds you that Sunday, September 9th is Grandparent’s Day. In our grandparents we have sensed and felt the thread of history and the treasure of tradition that lies within our families. We pray that those who guide our early steps and called forth our talents be richly rewarded by God, our Divine Parent.
