A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners:

Welcome to our Blessed Sacrament Weekend!  This is a weekend for fellowship and fun all around.  We are grateful to all our visitors and guests who come to support the life of our Parish and School by participating in all the events that are part of this weekend.  Your presence with us lets us know that we are a valued part of the larger world.

Special thanks go out to those who have worked so hard to make this weekend all that it is.  As many know, a number of families have been working behind the scenes to pull off the Oktoberfest on Saturday and the Parish Picnic on Sunday.  It all comes together in the end, but not without lots of blood, sweat and tears flowing from the staff and members of the Blessed Sacrament community.

We realize that this year was a special challenge due to the two “main events” falling on the same weekend.  That should not happen in the future.  As plans are being set now, the Oktoberfest will become a First Weekend of October annual event, and the Parish Picnic will be one of the first weekends after the opening of School, possibly mid-September.

In any case, this is to be a weekend of fun.  Thanks to all who make it possible.  Let’s enjoy who we are and all we can be.  May God pour out His blessings on us and all who join us as we enjoy this time together.

Morning Prayer

Lord, make me ready to do Your Will. Give me strength and courage, love and patience to accept the day's trials as well as its blessings. May I never dismiss the gentle promptings of Your Spirit. If I do, call me by name until my heart returns to You. I pray for those who need You most, especially those I encounter today. Amen.

Father, take my eyes and ears, and open my senses to receive Your Word.  Lord Jesus, take my hands, and fill them with work to be done in Your Name. Holy Spirit, take my heart, and grant me the joy of Your people.  Divine Trinity, unite my mind and body, my soul and spirit, my heart and will. Amen.

Evening Prayer

Light of the World, Star Ever-Shining, at the end of the day You say to me, "Do not be afraid."  But the powerful are threatening and the poor are in tears. Rescue us, Savior, for we rest only in You. Do not leave us in our own weak hands, but comfort us and hide us in the shadow of Your wings. Repair any damage we caused today in action or in idleness, and grant us the peace and joy that comes with the dawn of hope. Amen.

DID YOU KNOW that the Blessing of Children is a Catholic Tradition that has its roots in the Old Testament?  Parents have the right and responsibility to bless their children.

Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the Patriarchs, gave special blessings to each of their sons.  Jesus blessed children by laying hands on them.  Parents and Godparents bless infants about to be baptized at the very beginning of the Baptismal Ritual.

If you have not developed a custom of blessing your children each day, it is never too late to do so.  Children should learn to ask for a blessing from parents before any activity of importance and at the end of each day.

Children are a blessing and we are to bless them with the grace that has been given to us.  Parents and Grandparents, bless your little ones!

BAA 2007

We are almost there!

The most recent report from the Diocese of Columbus has the exciting news that we now have pledges for the amount of $43,661.12.  Our Parish Goal is $44,597.12.  So we have reached 97.9% with pledges from 212 households (out of 644) and an average gift of $205.94.

We offer heartfelt thanks to all who have pledged.  We heartily encourage any who have not made a pledge to help us reach the goal.

Remember, after we reach our goal, funds that are donated through the B.A.A. are returned to the parish without the diocesan tax.  Please consider making a pledge if your family has not already done so.

Only 1/3 of our membership has achieved something wonderful.  If only five more families would make a pledge with the average gift, we would be at our goal. Are we not all grateful for all that God has done for us?

Men of the Parish: The Diocesan Catholic Men’s Ministry is leading an initiative to encourage the formation of Men’s Faith - Sharing Groups within parishes.  At Blessed Sacrament, we have begun a group under the sponsorship of the Holy Name Society which meets 6:30 am, the second & fourth Saturdays of each month.  It gives us a fresh start to the weekend while taking very little time away from home & family.  You are all encouraged to join our group or join together and form groups that meet at other times.  These groups work best when small: ideally, no more than 8 to 10 members.

If you are interested in becoming part of a group, looking to increase spirituality & understanding of our faith, & growing in holiness, consider being a part of this program.  The following members will give you more information and help you set up a group, at a time & place convenient to you; just call us: Alan Clune - 763-3219, Rick Sexton - 501-5076, Jay Goletz - 763-3772, Dcn. Bob Ghiloni – 345-1122 or Vern Jewett – 348-0038.

What we have learned together:  Everything that is truly important works out if we hold steady.  At times, our own plans and expectations may have to be set aside.  But reaching toward a goal, even if that goal is not reached, moves us beyond where we are at the present moment.  It is worthwhile attempting to accomplish goals that are beyond us.  When we succeed, it is a gift.  When we fail according to our expectations, we still accomplish something.  At the very least, we discover what not to do in the future!

It’s Time – Bake Sale

Five years ago we decided that we had some time and talent left over that we could apply to the “building Fund” of the new school, over and beyond our personal donation. We made a commitment to do a weekly ‘Bake Sale’ for 5 years. That time is now completed. During this period we have collected from your donations around $20,000. THANK YOU! But now it is time!

We have completed our commitment and our health is saying ‘it is time’ to pass it on or give it up altogether. I would not expect one or two people to take this over. However a team of four, six, or eight people would be able to rotate weekends and it would not be a burden on anyone.  Time involved: about one hour on Friday morning for pick up, about one hour on Saturday for set - up and another one hour on Sunday morning for pick - up and tear - down.

We will continue through September and the new team will begin on October 5th. Instructions and OJT available!

Anyone who would be interested in this opportunity to help the parish debt with time and talent please call: Deacon Bob at 345-1122 or 258-4912.

This weekend all “active” Catholic households should have received a special issue of the newly formatted Catholic Times Diocesan Newspaper.  As an “insert” is a “special” subscription envelope.  If you like what you see and try the Catholic Times for the next 6 months, simply place $5 into the subscription envelope, complete, and either, drop it into the collection basket at Mass this weekend or next, or drop it into the mail before October 1st.  If you write a check, and you want to drop it into the collection, make it payable to the parish; if you are going to mail a check, make it payable to Catholic Times.  We hope you enjoy all the improvements to “your” Diocesan newspaper.

Licking County Coalition for Housing Matched Savings Program offers low to moderate income individuals & families the help they need to become successful homeowners. Along with a significant monetary contribution (up to $2,000), the program will help participants overcome other obstacles, such as credit challenges and financial education. Called an Individual Development Account (IDA) program, it is a means for participants to save money regularly, usually around $50 per month, towards the down payment of a home. This money is matched by LCCH at a 2 to 1 rate, which means that for every dollar the participant saves, LCCH will contribute two dollars.

Participants must be enrolled in the program for a minimum of six months before they can receive match funds; on average it takes about two years to reach a $1,000 savings goal. LCCH then matches it to give the participant $3,000 to use towards their down payment and any other costs associated with purchasing their home. During that time, participants meet regularly with their case manager and work on improving their credit. The required financial education includes basics, like budgeting and credit, and asset-specific training. Facilitated by realtors, mortgage bankers, and other experts in the field, the asset training will arm participants with the knowledge needed to get the best possible deal.

LCCH is currently taking applicants for the IDA program. If you’re interested, or would like more information, please call (740) 345-1970 between 8:30am & 4:30pm Monday through Friday.
