A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners:

October is Respect Life month. We are invited to express our Faith in the fundamental truth that life is a sacred gift from God.

The simple truth is that even before human life begins, it belongs to God.  Life is sacred.  Debates about when life begins or about what kind of life is worth living cloud the issue.  God alone has the right to make those determinations.  It is written into the heart of every human being to understand this.  Emotions can cloud our understanding of the truth, but they cannot change the truth.  Popular vote does not determine the truth.  It is not optional for Catholics to be involved in the effort to promote respect for life among our brothers and sisters.  We are charged to protect the most vulnerable.

This month also serves to bring into relief God’s Call to us to live in accord with the Gospel through Vocation Awareness Sunday October 14 and World Mission Sunday October 21.  Our whole life is meant to bring others to an awareness of the God Who calls us by name.  Your life in this world has a purpose.  That purpose can be discerned and you are invited to make a commitment to it.  You are called to a life lived for God in time and in Eternity.

I encourage you to be practical about your response to Life, Call and Mission.  Don’t just let it be a theory you subscribe to.  Let it become more real by concrete choices that change you and those around you.

For The Holy Family

Faithful God, we pray for all families who have been forced from their homes by war, or flood, or the need to find food. Grant them courage as they travel, safety as they seek refuge, and hope for a secure future.  And may we, who have been given so much, learn to be generous and welcoming to those who, fearful and needy, seek shelter among us.  Amen.

Everybody today seems to be in such a terrible rush; anxious for greater developments and greater wishes and so on; so that children have very little time for their parents; Parents have very little time for each other; and the home begins the disruption of the peace of the world.

DID YOU KNOW that teaching the Faith is a responsibility that falls especially on Parents?  We are responsible for the material and psychological well being of our children.  We respond to these needs by giving shelter, food, clothing and affection and encouragement.  As the children grow, we ensure that they learn basic skills so they will be capable of providing for their own needs at a later time.  So too are we responsible for educating our children in the ways of Faith.

It is not a good idea to “wait for them to decide” about spiritual matters any more than we wait for them to pick out clothing or food before we attend to these matters.  They learn gradually to communicate preferences material and emotionally.  Spirituality and knowledge of the Faith requires a similar gradual development.

Parents: you have a grave responsibility to teach your children both by word and example.  If you are living faithfully, they will see what you are doing.  If, on the other hand, you are not responding to what you have been given, your children will not learn what God wants for them.  Teach your children by word and example.  Then they will be nourished spiritually and come to know the Gift of God in their lives.

What we have learned together:  Seeds planted do not grow right away.  It takes patience and perseverance to bring about some plans.  Only God can see the whole picture.  He calls us to live where we are, acknowledging limitations.  He invites us to trust in Him and to hope for a glorious future.  If we do this, there will be a rich harvest.

Choose Life…On this Respect Life Sunday, the prophet Habakkuk speaks directly to those involved in the struggle to promote respect for human life: “Destruction and violence are before me, there is strife, and clamorous discord,” the Lord replies, “Write down the vision clearly upon the tablets…for the vision still has its time, presses on to fulfillment, and will not disappoint…” (Habakkuk, 1:2-3)

A Prayer of Reverence for Life from the Marriage and Family Life Office: Almighty God, giver of all that is good, we thank You for the precious gift of human life: for life in the womb, coming from Your creative power; for the life of children, making us glad with their freshness and promise; for the life of young people, hoping for a better world; for the life of people who are disabled, teaching us that every life has value; for the life of the elderly, witnessing to the ageless values of patience and wisdom. Like Blessed Mary, may we always say “YES” to Your gift. May we defend it and promote it from conception to its natural end. And bring us at last, O Father, to the fullness of eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

An Invitation to Singers and Musicians

We would like to expand our present choir membership so that a full choir would be available at each of the three weekend Masses: 6pm Saturday; 8am &10:30am on Sunday. Also needed are individuals who can be free to sing in a funeral choir.

This is an invitation for any one who likes to sing or anyone who plays an instrument to come forward and share your talent.  Singers do not need to be able to read music.  Perfect talent is not required, but rather faith and a desire to sing or play "from the heart".

If interested, please contact Rick Snoor at 740-814-0028, send an e-mail at music@blsac.net, or see him after any of the Masses.

October is Respect Life Month

The Catholic Church has long held October to be the month in which we prayerfully celebrate our firm belief that all human life is sacred. The Marriage and Family Life Office encourages you to set aside some uninterrupted time with the members of your family. Choose an evening in October and agree to “put your family first.” Cancel meetings and events that evening and turn off the television and computer to spend time appreciating the unique gifts each person brings to your family and the world. You might retell the story of each child’s birth or share family scrapbooks together. Recite a prayer or Psalm that celebrates life as you gather for your family meal, and end the day with a bedtime blessing of thanksgiving for life.
