A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners:

As this bulletin is going to press, we have received word that Bishop Campbell has had a heart attack and is in stable condition at Mount Carmel West Hospital in Columbus.  We hope that the recovery of the Bishop will be swift.  Even as I have been typing this message, I received a further call from the Chancery letting us know that Bishop Campbell is not able to be with us for our Confirmation.  He could have asked us to postpone the celebration of the Sacrament and to reschedule it for another day.  Instead it has been worked out that we have the celebration in his absence.

There are several options that the Church foresees in such circumstances.  If another Bishop is available, then that Bishop could step in.  Our retired Bishop James Griffin will in fact be stepping into a familiar role.  This will give us an opportunity to thank him for all he has done for our Parish through the years, including getting us started on our Building Campaign.

Bishop Campbell could have chosen to delegate special faculties to another priest, even the Pastor of the Parish if another Bishop was not available.  In this case, the Church helps us to realize just how closely the Bishop and his Priests work together.  The Sacrament of Confirmation is regularly celebrated by Parish Priests at the Easter Vigil and on other occasions in the initiation of adults into the Catholic Faith.  It is also conferred by Priests on those who have not been confirmed who are in danger of death.  Priests of the Eastern Rite and the Orthodox Churches confers “Chrismation” (their name for the Sacrament) at the same time as Baptism even for infants.  The Agent of all the Sacraments is the Holy Spirit.  Jesus Christ makes use of human beings to bestow His Gifts of grace on others.

This Sunday, let us pray for Bishop Campbell’s health and for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit on us and on the whole Church.  And let us keep all Bishops and Priests in our prayers in thanksgiving for the graces God we receive through them.

Come Holy Ghost, Creator blest!
And in our hearts take up Your rest;
Come with Your grace and heavenly aid,
To fill the hearts which you have made.

O Comforter, to you do we cry,
O heavenly Gift of God Most High;
O Fount of life and Fire of love,
And sweet Anointing from above!

Far from us drive the foe we dread,
And grant us Your true peace instead.
So shall we not, with You for Guide,
Turn from the path of life aside.

Oh, may Your grace on us bestow,
The Father and the Son to know;
And You through endless times confessed,
Of both the eternal Spirit blest.

Now to the Father and the Son,
Who rose from death, be glory given,
With you, O holy Comforter,
Henceforth by all in earth and heaven. Amen.

·          Basic sanitation is often lacking.

DID YOU KNOW that renewal of promises which we make is a way of deepening our own commitment?  Each year at Easter time, the Church invites us to a renewal of our Baptismal promises.  This renewal also takes place in the context of the Sacrament of Confirmation for those who are to be confirmed.  Married couples and members of religious communities take special anniversaries as opportunities to reaffirm their familial commitments.  Each year at the Chrism Mass bishops and priests renew their commitment to priestly ministry.  All of us are called to live out the promises we have made as a sign of God’s Presence in our lives.  God has been faithful to us.  May we respond in faithful service according to the call He has placed in our hearts.

Choose Life… Jesus told his disciples to invite the poor, blind, and the lame to dine with us, saying, “You should be pleased they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid in the resurrection of the just.” So also when we speak, work, and pray for the unborn children, we advocate for those least able to repay us.  Thus, love for the unborn is the most selfless form of love.  Nothing comes from them in return.” Father Frank Pavone, National Director, Priest for Life.
