A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners:

This weekend I am returning from vacation.  Since this column is being written before I leave, I sincerely hope that I am returning rested and refreshed.  It is my intention to give you my all, whatever I may be feeling.

We have reached a time in our life together that I am conscious that at best I can offer you some suggestions and plant some seeds that only you will see grow.  I am very proud of all that we have accomplished together in the years we have had.  It is far more than I could ever have asked for.  You continue to teach me about the wonders that God can accomplish among those who are willing to work with His grace and with others who follow Him.

I am confident that you will continue to grow in grace.  What has begun will continue to blossom and to develop into a rich harvest.  I look forward to future “returns” to Blessed Sacrament when I will be able to observe all that the Lord has done in my absence.

The first annual Vacation Bible School will be history by the time you read this.  Already, there are signs that it will be a tremendous success.  I want to thank all who have worked so hard to accomplish it.  I heard the suggestion over several years, and this year spoke a word of challenge to do it. And it has happened, by the grace of God!

Here’s another idea for you: Our last Parish Picture Directory was done in 2004 and 2005 as part of our Parish and School Centennial.  The first one done after I arrived was done in 1997.  Since this will be my last year as your Pastor, I would love to have an updated Picture Directory to carry with me as a “souvenir” of my journey with you, a picture of the family as it is now.

Could it happen in Fall of 2007 or Winter of 2008?  I guarantee that it would be a lot of work for whoever would agree to oversee it.  There would be much frustration and it will certainly not be an easy task.  But I would be grateful, and I am sure others would enjoy it too.  If you would be willing, we would give you all the help we can, and space in the bulletin would be readily supplied.  If you think you would do it, give the Office a call.

Come to the St. Augustine/St. Gabriel Celebration

If you are a former parishioner of St. Augustine Parish, St. Gabriel Parish or SS. Augustine & Gabriel Parish, we would like to invite you to come to the SS. Augustine & Gabriel Parish Church for a special 11am Mass on Sunday, August 26th.  The original altar has been repaired and reset on the original altar platform & the sanctuary has been refurbished.  At this special Mass, Bishop Campbell will rededicate the altar and bless the renovated sanctuary.  A potluck meal will follow.  Current parishioners would like all former parishioners to join us for this special day.  Contact the church office at 614-268-3123 for information or let them know that you’ll be coming.

Blessed Sacrament Bingo is returning Friday, August 3rd.  Bingo is our largest fundraiser each year. It requires a lot of volunteers but is well worth the return.

We are making some changes for this year’s teams:

·    Each grade will be responsible for a team.  The exception will be our incoming Kindergarten class which will participate with Team 8 (our Eighth Grade parents).

·    Each team must have a Team Captain.  Team Captains will be responsible for their teams, including set up at 4:30 pm on Fridays.

So far we have captains for Teams 2, 5, 6 & 7. Bingo will not start until we have captains for Teams 1, 3, 4 & 8. If you have a student in these grades and want to be the Captain, contact Mike Tennyson at 973-5377 by July 31st.

We will be having a mandatory Team Captain training on July 31st at 6pm in the annex.  This training is for Team Captains as well as anyone who would like to learn a new position or has never participated in Bingo before.  Remember our Blessed Sacrament Students are counting on you.

It's not the hours you put in but what you put in the hours that count. Any questions about Bingo for this year contact Mike Tennyson at 973-5377 or ohtenfam@gmail.com

DID YOU KNOW that Absolution is given in the Sacrament of Penance in the Name of Jesus, the High Priest?  The priest who pronounces the words is not the source of the Forgiveness that is communicated.  It flows from the Paschal Mystery, the suffering, death and Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Notice how the words of Absolution make this clear:

God the Father of Mercies, through the death and Resurrection of His Son, has reconciled the world to Himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins.  Through the ministry of the Church, may God give you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins.  In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

The Absolution entrusted to the action of the man who is an ordained priest is from the Lord through the Ministry He has appointed to be exercised in His Church.  It is available for you.

What we have learned together: It takes all of us working together to accomplish what God asks of us. God is willing to wait, and to allow us to be stretched by our interaction with one another and with those beyond our community, so that what He does among us is beyond our own capacity.  None of us can take individual credit.  It is the work of God and of all of us together.

Mark Huddy, J.D., will present “Following the Gospel Message in Everyday Life,” Sunday, July 29th, 7pm at the Jessing Center, Pontifical College Josephinum, 7625 N. High St., Cols.  As Catholics we are called to hear the Good News of the Gospel message and bring it to fruition on our everyday life.  One way that we fulfill this responsibility is by practicing social justice.  The term “social justice” has been used in many ways in the Catholic tradition, including use as “the virtue that inclines one to co-operate with others in order to better serve the common good.” Join us for an evening that will lift your spirits and propel you to seek and act on what is good.  Sponsored by the 2007 Summer Institute, Mark Huddy’s talk is free of charge and open to all interested persons; light refreshments will be served.

Blessed Sacrament Women’s Ministry, A Mother’s Heart, is planning to again, host the Single Parent Family Fair on Saturday, August 11th, 10am – 2pm in the Annex & parking lot.  Our goal is to have a total community sponsored event targeted to single parents, or any family that is financially, emotionally, or spiritually challenged.  This annual event will enable family’s free access to a wide variety of resources that may help alleviate some of their short and long term burdens with the immediate focus on getting single parent families/children ready for school in August.

We want to offer fun for the kids along with free services such as: hair cuts, car washes, & oil changes.  Our plan is to invite agencies within the county such as the Health Dept., Job & Family Services, Pathways, to name a few.

We are requesting donations from area churches and business to help is this big endeavor such as: school supplies, book bags, socks & undergarments for kids.  We are also requesting items that could be used as door prizes such as gift cards to local stores.

A list of school supplies will be available in our church vestibule.  Donations will be collected in the church Vestibule or parish office.  Monetary donations will be used to help families pay for school fees for the coming school year.

If you work for a company or agency that could help with providing services, set up a table of information or volunteer at this event contact Monica Stanley 763-4047 or Kathy Wilson 345-4290.

Our Marian Club is looking for person or persons who would be willing to help coordinate and “run” funeral luncheons as needed.  This would entail contacting volunteers who would call on parishioners who have signed-up to donate certain food items or dishes (callers are already assigned), making sure there will be enough food for the luncheon.  They would also see that there is enough help to serve & clean up (we have a list of volunteers), and be at the school/annex, when food arrives on the day of the luncheon.  We have a couple of volunteers but more are needed.  Contact Alice Clune at 763-3219 if you can help. A meeting will be set up in the near future to help give full instructions. Thank you.

Choose Life…”Why is abortion a bone in the throat of contemporary culture? Because we all know intuitively that it violates the rules that make a loving, civilized culture possible.  We also know that far from being a ‘victimless’ crime, abortion kills an innocent passenger and maims the unknowing driver.” (David Andrusko, NRL News, 3/07)
