A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners:

Whenever our Parish is invited to consider the needs of those beyond our community, we are experiencing a privilege that goes beyond our understanding.  This weekend, as part of our annual Mission Appeal, our Parish is being called to be part of an effort to reach out to, and to share Faith with, our brothers and sisters beyond the confines of our territory.  This is an expansion of the Kingdom.  Insofar as we choose to be generous and to give, we become part of what God is doing through the work of Missionaries.

As your Pastor, I call upon you to be generous.  I am never ashamed to ask you to give to those in need.  Let your measure not be what you have, but God’s generosity to you.  If you give until it hurts, God can stretch you to receive even more.  If you choose to be “parochial” instead—to deny your capacity to give beyond the needs you have yourself—then you are limiting your own ability to respond to God’s grace.

I firmly believe that we cannot outdo God in generosity.  If we care for those God invites us to care for, He will see to it that we too find our needs met by the generosity of others.

“The Lord loveth a cheerful giver.  He also accepteth from a grouch.”  Whether you are cheerful or grouchy, I charge you to give with a generous heart!

What Cancer Cannot Do

It cannot cripple love.

  It cannot shatter hope.

   It cannot corrode faith.

     It cannot destroy peace.

      It cannot kill friendships.

        It cannot suppress memories.

         It cannot silence courage.

           It cannot invade the soul.

            It cannot steal eternal life.

              It cannot conquer the spirit.

We welcome Father Les Schmidt of the GLENMARY HOME MISSIONERS, who will speak at all Masses this weekend on behalf of the home mission work of Glenmary priests, brothers and co-workers.  Father Les was ordained in 1961.  For over 30 years he has served as Glenmary’s regional worker in Appalachia and rural South.  Traveling on average 1,000 per week, he combines the roles of catalyst and prophet.  With that broader view and set of contracts, Father Les advances home mission ministry in the areas of ecumenism, peace and justice – working with the bishops and clergy in Glenmary dioceses as well as other Glenmary missioners.

This special collection is our opportunity to support evangelization in the home missions.  Those who do not respond in today’s collection can make their offering in a designated envelope next weekend.

Blessed Sacrament Bingo is returning Friday, August 3rd.  Bingo is our largest fundraiser each year. It requires a lot of volunteers but is well worth the return.

We are making some changes for this year’s teams:

·    Each grade will be responsible for a team.  The exception will be our incoming Kindergarten class which will participate with Team 8 (our Eighth Grade parents).

·    Each team must have a Team Captain.  Team Captains will be responsible for their teams, including set up at 4:30 pm on Fridays.

So far we have captains for Teams 2, 5, 6 & 7. Bingo will not start until we have captains for Teams 1, 3, 4 & 8. If you have a student in these grades and want to be the Captain, contact Mike Tennyson at 973-5377 by July 31st.

We will be having a mandatory Team Captain training on July 31st at 6pm in the annex.  This training is for Team Captains as well as anyone who would like to learn a new position or has never participated in Bingo before.  Remember our Blessed Sacrament Students are counting on you.

It's not the hours you put in but what you put in the hours that count. Any questions about Bingo for this year contact Mike Tennyson at 973-5377 or ohtenfam@gmail.com

DID YOU KNOW that Confession is necessary in the case of mortal sin?  It is not an optional part of the Catholic Faith.  If you want to re-establish communion with God, to be reconciled to the One Whom you have offended, you must make use of the Sacrament.  Confession means speaking the truth from the heart, not concealing from God or the Confessor any of the sins you have committed that are serious.

Recall that when the Doctor (your earthly physician) asks for symptoms of your ills, you tell them readily.  Sins are the symptoms of our need for spiritual healing.  We tell our sins, both great and small, because they enable the Doctor of our souls (the priest) to diagnose our spiritual illness.

Confession is indeed good for the soul.  Come to Confession early and often, and you will feel better, body and soul!

What we have learned together: Our children are worth all that we can do for them.  A commitment to passing on the Faith to them is the heart of our life as a Parish family.

In an effort to maintain the appearance of our parish and school grounds, we would like to divide the areas into sections and have appointed parishioners maintain each section.  There is so much ground to care for that this should make it much easier for everyone.  The only duties would be to weed, rake, and clear debris.  You may work on your section at your convenience and enjoy making our church/school an attractive sight for the neighborhood.  Call Pat Scott at 345-4198 if you are interested.  Many hands make light work.

Rev. Daniel Torson, CPPS, D.Min., will present “Dorothy Day: A Woman Haunted by God,” Sunday, July 22nd, 7pm at the Jessing Center, Pontifical College Josephinum, 7625 N. High St., Columbus.  Dorothy Day (1897-1980) of New York City is nationally recognized for her work as the founder of the 20th century Catholic Worker Movement.  Catholic Worker Houses of Hospitality, present in cities across the country, continue her legacy today.  But, there is much more to Dorothy.  She was an atheist in her college years and a journalist by profession.  God kept “calling” her and God was relentless!  It is a story of her faith journey that is the inspiration for contemporary journeys of faith!  Dorothy Day’s spirituality and legacy is a treasured jewel of American Catholicism.  Sponsored by the 2006 Diocesan Summer Institute, Fr. Torson’s talk is free of charge and open to all interested persons; light refreshments will be served.

Blessed Sacrament Women’s Ministry, A Mother’s Heart, is planning to again, host the Single Parent Family Fair on Saturday, August 11th, 10am – 2pm in the Annex & parking lot.  Our goal is to have a total community sponsored event targeted to single parents, or any family that is financially, emotionally, or spiritually challenged.  This annual event will enable family’s free access to a wide variety of resources that may help alleviate some of their short and long term burdens with the immediate focus on getting single parent families/children ready for school in August.

We want to offer fun for the kids along with free services such as: hair cuts, car washes, & oil changes.  Our plan is to invite agencies within the county such as the Health Dept., Job & Family Services, Pathways, to name a few.

We are requesting donations from area churches and business to help is this big endeavor such as: school supplies, book bags, socks & undergarments for kids.  We are also requesting items that could be used as door prizes such as gift cards to local stores.

A list of school supplies will be available in our church vestibule.  Donations will be collected in the church Vestibule or parish office.  Monetary donations will be used to help families pay for school fees for the coming school year.

If you work for a company or agency that could help with providing services, set up a table of information or volunteer at this event contact Monica Stanley 763-4047 or Kathy Wilson 345-4290.

Our Marian Club is looking for person or persons who are  willing to help coordinate and “run” funeral luncheons as needed.  This would entail contacting volunteers who would call on parishioners who have signed-up to donate certain food items or dishes (callers are already assigned), making sure there will be enough food for the luncheon.  They would also see that there is enough help to serve & clean up (we have a list of volunteers), and be at the school/annex, when food arrives on the day of the luncheon.  We have a couple of volunteers but more are needed.  Contact Alice Clune at 763-3219 if you can help. A meeting will be set up in the near future to help give full instructions. Thank you.

Choose Life…Speaking to a Los Angeles rally protesting the threatened passage of an assisted suicide bill by the California legislature, Rabbi Louis Feldman asserted that the victims of physician-assisted suicide will be “the poor and disabled, ill-insured, vulnerable and lonely people. …We must remember that the road to Auschwitz was paved with a euthanasia program.  Once you negate the inviolability of human life, anything is possible.” (The Southern Cross, 4/12/07)
