A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners:

Freedom is God’s gift to human beings.  In our free will, we are given the marvelous capacity to choose our destiny.  This freedom is not absolute.  It is not something that we can take for granted.  We must exercise our freedom, or we can lose it.  Freedom brings a quality to life that we do not experience when we are not free.  The opposite of freedom is slavery, acting under compulsion.

There is an irony at work in our current dominant culture.  While many voice the desire to be free, so often the actions and behaviors they insist upon are a sign of slavery rather than freedom.  True freedom is the capacity to choose the destiny God has intended for us, eternal life with Him.

As a nation, we value our freedom as a foundational principle of government and human interaction.  We chose a path as a member of the community of nations with life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as hallmarks of our identity as a people.  As we honor our country and all those who have served to preserve the hard-won freedom, let us live the freedom well.

May God bless America!

wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

My country, ’tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims’ pride,
From every mountainside,
Let freedom ring!

My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love;
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture thrills,
Like that above.

Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees,
Sweet freedom’s song;
Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.

Our fathers’ God, to Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing;
Long may our land be bright
With freedom’s holy light;
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God, our King.

DID YOU KNOW that the Our Father is a prayer that serves as a model for all our prayer?  When Jesus taught His disciples to pray this prayer, He was doing more than teaching them (and us) words to say.  Rather, He was teaching an attitude to have for all prayer.

When we pray, we are to call God Our Father.  Jesus is sharing with us, as His brothers and sisters, the relationship He has with God, Whom He calls “Abba, that is, “Daddy, Papa, Father dear.”  We are one with Jesus in having God in an intimate relationship with us.

The petitions that follow spell out the depth of that relationship and express our attitude of willingness to cooperate with the grace that flows from such a relationship.

We acknowledge His Name; we call for His Kingdom; we seek His Will.  An attitude of trust and reliance on God’s Providence is also expressed: we ask for sustenance, forgiveness, and protection in the face of evil.

The heart of the prayer is the request for healing of relationship—forgiveness and reconciliation.  Jesus teaches us that God’s Mercy is available to us only when we allow it to flow through us.  To forgive is truly divine, but it is ours to live humanly.

Our “thanks” to Terri Scott of State Farm Ins. and her team of workers involved in the "Good Neighbor Service Initiative Project" for improving our church/school landscape.  Our sincere gratitude to Irene Cates who has worked on the church/school gardens and generously donated over a dozen shrubs to complete the landscape.  In an effort to maintain the appearance of our grounds, we would like to divide the areas into sections and have appointed parishioners to maintain each section.  There is so much ground to care for that this should make it much easier for everyone.  The only duties would be to weed, rake, and clear debris.  You may work on your section at your convenience and enjoy making our church/school an attractive sight for the neighborhood.  Call Pat Scott at 345-4198 if you are interested.  Many hands make light work.

Blessed Sacrament Women’s Ministry, A Mother’s Heart, is planning to again, host the Single Parent Family Fair on Saturday, August 11th, 10am – 2pm in the Annex & parking lot.  Our goal is to have a total community sponsored event targeted to single parents, or any family that is financially, emotionally, or spiritually challenged.  This annual event will enable family’s free access to a wide variety of resources that may help alleviate some of their short and long term burdens with the immediate focus on getting single parent families/children ready for school in August.

   We want to offer fun for the kids along with free services such as: hair cuts, car washes, & oil changes.  Our plan is to invite agencies within the county such as the Health Dept., Job & Family Services, Pathways, to name a few.

   We are requesting donations from area churches and business to help is this big endeavor such as: school supplies, book bags, socks & undergarments for kids.  We are also requesting items that could be used as door prizes such as gift cards to local stores.

   A list of school supplies will be available in our church vestibule.  Donations will be collected in the church Vestibule or parish office.  Monetary donations will be used to help families pay for school fees for the coming school year.

            If you work for a company or agency that could help with providing services, set up a table of information or volunteer at this event contact Monica Stanley 763-4047 or Kathy Wilson 345-4290.

Choose Life…As we celebrate our nation’s birth, it is good to remember our founding principles, chief among which are the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  Legalized abortion has upset that balance, but the Supreme Court took a small step toward restoring it when, in a decision upholding a ban on partial birth abortions, Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote, “The government may show its profound respect for the life within the woman,” A statement to celebrate and hopefully a sign of greater respect to come.
