A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners:

This week I have the privilege of joining with a couple of my brother priests to offer a Parish Mission, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Glenmont, Ohio.  They are celebrating their sesquicentennial, that is, 150 years as a parish.  The theme they have picked is: “Celebration of Life - family, church & community.”  As I open the Mission for the community of Glenmont at the Sunday Masses of the Catholic Community of Tuscarawas County, their Pastor, Fr. Ron Aubry, who was just a few years ahead of me in his formation for the priesthood, will be at Blessed Sacrament for our Sunday morning Masses.  I know you will give him a warm welcome.

In our own Parish, we are entering into the observance of a Year of Faith.  For Christmas, you were invited to do three actions to begin the Year:  (1) to make an Act of Faith, renewing your commitment to the Lord, personally; (2) to share your Faith in the Lord born for us in Bethlehem with your children, telling them what He means to you; (3) to pray for someone you intend to invite to live the Catholic Faith, either one who is unfamiliar with it or one who has moved away from practice of the Faith for some reason.  If you have responded to this invitation, thank you!  If not, now is a good time.  We have a brief respite before Lent begins, so let’s do what we can to begin the renewal of Faith.

Emmanuel

God Is with Us

   Hope for the World

The promise of the prophet

   came true that very night

   when Angels sang of glory

   to shepherds and their flock.

"Prince of Peace"

they called Him, "Savior of the World!"

   The shepherds wondered;

yet came to adore the child.

Be born in me today, O Christ

and let me see Your face

   in every human being

   encountered day by day:

The lowly, destitute, the sick, the old,

   the children; men and women

who have not yet been told

   of Your saving presence.

Lead them, too, to truth and light!

Take from me fear and worry!

   Grant me the shepherds' faith

   the trust and affirmation

that YOU are with me always.

And so I join Heaven's chorus

   in singing praise to God,

Who gave the world the Savior:

   JESUS--HE IS MY LORD!

from Brother Tobias, O.S.B.

DID YOU KNOW that the Church receives the Vows and Promises made by her members and holds them accountable in order to enable them to be Faithful?  Vows are made to God.  Promises are made to God or to our brothers and sisters in the Church.  Either form of commitment serves to establish a way of being and relating that charts our path through life.  We apply our Faith to life by putting our trust in God and in others, and making ourselves responsible for and accountable to one another.

When a dispensation is granted, it is only after study of the situation to discover whether it is reasonable to hold the person accountable.  God does not demand what is not possible for real human beings.  However, a dispensation is not a denial of the commitment made.  It is an act of mercy.  On the other hand, when the Church holds us accountable to our promises and vows, it is not a cruel act.  Rather, it is a sign of trust in who we really are and in the capacity we have to be Faithful.

(clip art) Join in the worldwide mission of Jesus! By our Baptism, we are all missionaries – called to share our faith in Jesus Christ with our family and friends, with our neighbors, indeed, with the whole world.

Next Sunday we are invited to make a special commitment as missionaries.  We are invited to join in the worldwide mission of Jesus by joining the Propagation of Faith.

In making this commitment, we pledge to…

VPray daily for the missionary work of the Church, offering our personal crosses for missionaries and those we serve,

VOffer regular financial help in support of those who bring the “Good News” of Jesus to our brothers and sisters throughout the Missions.

Please say “yes” to this special missionary call next weekend.  Thank you very much!

Saint Philip Neri once gave a gossipy lady the following penance: "Go to the market, buy a chicken, and pluck it on your way back here, scattering the feathers as you walk.   When you give me the plucked chicken, I'll tell you the rest of your penance."  The baffled woman did as she was told. After she handed the plucked chicken to the saint, he said, "Now that you've spread those feathers about, go pick them up." "But, Father! It's impossible to know where they've all gone!"
"Just like the words of your gossip," he said.

The Family Life Office reminds you that January 15th is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. As a nonviolent civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr. was a social activist in the best Christian tradition. You may want to pray these words with your family: Holy God, you create every person in your own image and likeness.  Because your Holy Spirit lives within us, we are all brothers and sisters.  We remember our brother, Martin Luther King, Jr., who worked so tirelessly to proclaim that all your people are equal.  We remember his powerful message about the dignity and worth of every human being.  Holy God, help us live as one family, rejoicing in our common bonds and respecting our differences.  We ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son.  Amen.
