A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners:

The terrible cold we have been facing the past few weeks reminds me of something that is worth noting.  Most of our cultural images of Hell seem to point to it as a place of torment that is full of fire.  Dante Alighieri, on the contrary, presents and image of the Inferno in his Divine Comedy as being frozen at its core.  The central place, occupied by the devil and those who have done his bidding most sinfully, is ice.  Although this perspective may surprise you, if you think about it for a little while, it will make sense.

God’s Love is imaged by the Saints as a Living Flame.  Where God’s Love is lacking, due to rejection by those who would receive His Love if their hearts were open, there is no warmth.  The ultimate “cold shoulder” is the rejection of the invitation to God’s grace.  Who of us have not experienced being rejected in this way?

While we experience this cold, let us keep in mind all who are affected by it, especially the homeless and the poor.  Let us also pray that we may open our hearts to the warmth of God’s Love and Compassion that we may not be left out in the cold as Eternity beckons.

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

Sancte Michael Archangele, defende nos in proelio, contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto praesidium. Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur: tuque, Princeps militiae caelestis, Satanam aliosque spiritus malignos, qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo, divina virtute, in infernum detrude. Amen.

St. Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; May God rebuke him, we humbly pray and do thou, O Prince of heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.

(COLUMN 3)

DID YOU KNOW that the Catholic Mass has a three-year cycle of readings?  Year A (last followed in 2005, next in 2008) has the Gospel of Matthew as the source for each Sunday’s Gospel.  Year B (last followed in 2006, next in 2009) uses the Gospel of Mark, supplemented by the Gospel of John with the Bread of Life Discourse (John 6) over several weeks.  Year C (this year, again in 2010) gives us weekly passages from the Gospel of Luke.

The first reading each Sunday is chosen in connection with the Gospel.  The second reading is a continuous reading from a New Testament Letter or Acts of the Apostles or the Book of Revelation, generally not directly related to the Gospel.

The weekday cycle has Year I (odd numbered years) and Year II (even numbered years).  There is a generous portion of all the Scriptures chosen for each day.  A cycle with special readings for Feasts and Saints Days completes the “richer fare” that has been given to us since the Second Vatican Council.

If you attend Mass each Sunday and Holy Day, as you are obliged to do by the Third Commandment, you hear the proclamation of a large portion of the Bible over the three-year cycle.  Come to daily Mass and you hear even more.

Anyone who doubts that the Catholic Church is a Bible-believing Church has not paid any attention to the Cycle of Readings!
