A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR
Dear Parishioners:
Yesterday, December 8, was the
Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.
It was a Holy Day of Obligation, even though it was a Saturday, since it
is the Patronal Feast of the our Nation.
The United States of America have been
consecrated to the Blessed Mother under the title of the Immaculate Conception
since 1792, when Bishop John Carroll, the first U.S. Bishop, made this
consecration. This was officially
expressed by all the U.S. Bishops at the Council of Baltimore in 1846,
confirmed by Pope Pius IX February 7, 1847.
It is interesting to note that this title was used even before the Dogma
of the Immaculate Conception was formally defined. (That took place in 1854.)
The Consecration was made again at the
dedication of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., in
1959 and renewed in 2006.
As
a nation, we are dedicated to the Blessed Mother, invoking her intercession and
protection. Our own Parish has been
consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on number of occasions. It is our responsibility as citizens of
these United States and as members of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament to
live as worthy sons and daughters of so noble a Mother.

Renewal of Consecration of the United States
to its Patroness, the Immaculate Conception
November 11, 2006
Most
Holy Trinity: Our Father in Heaven, Who chose Mary as the fairest of Your
daughters; Holy Spirit, Who chose Mary as Your spouse; God the Son, Who chose
Mary as Your mother; in union with Mary, we adore Your majesty and acknowledge
Your supreme, eternal dominion and authority.
Most Holy Trinity, we put the United States of America into the
hands of Mary Immaculate in order that she may present the country to You.
Through her we wish to thank You for the great resources of this land and for
the freedom, which has been its heritage. Through the intercession of Mary,
have mercy on the Catholic Church in America. Grant us peace. Have mercy on our
president and on all the officers of our government. Grant us a fruitful
economy born of justice and charity. Have mercy on capital and industry and
labor. Protect the family life of the nation. Guard the precious gift of many
religious vocations. Through the intercession of our mother, have mercy on the
sick, the poor, the tempted, sinners – on all who are in need.
Mary, Immaculate Virgin, our mother, Patroness of our land, we
praise you and honor you and give our country and ourselves to your sorrowful
and immaculate heart. O sorrowful and immaculate heart of Mary pierced by the
sword of sorrow prophesized by Simeon, save us from degeneration, disaster and
war. Protect us from all harm. O sorrowful and immaculate heart of Mary, you
who bore the sufferings of your Son in the depths of your heart, be our
advocate. Pray for us, that acting always according to your will and the will
of your divine Son, we may live and die pleasing to God. Amen.
[This same
text was used at the consecration that took place at the dedication of the
Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in 1959.]

DID YOU KNOW that A Vocation has
several moments of decision? When did
your Pastor decide to become a priest?
There are many answers that I give to that question. The truest answer right now is: This morning
as I was shaving. I have to decide to
be the priest I have been ordained to be each day, each moment. I can identify some key points of decision
in the past, but the decision that makes all the difference it the one I make
today.
I told my family when I was about 6
years old that I would grow up to be a priest.
In our 8th grade School Newspaper, I listed my future occupation as
“priest.” Out of high school, I went
into college choosing majors that would prepare for seminary studies. After college, I entered seminary. When the moment of decision came for
diaconate, I made my formal request to
be called to Holy Orders and was accepted.
After a year of diaconal ministry, I was ordained at the recommendation
of my seminary and through the choice of Bishop James A. Griffin.
Each step of the journey included an interior sense of
the rightness of this choice and an external verification. It was my free choice, but it was not my
decision; it was decided by the Church.
And so, here I am, your priest.
Obedience has called me here. I
am a priest.

What we have learned
together: There are mercies given by God that at certain times are painful
to experience. Due to the wounds of
life, we bump into one another and cause pain unwittingly. Some reactions are caused by anguish that is
buried very deep. When these are
brought to the surface, it is God’s Mercy, freeing our souls from what has been
hidden beneath the surface. It is a
mercy to the soul who is thrashing in pain, contrary to all appearances, to
have the opportunity to let it out. It
is a mercy to the souls that share the pain, even unwillingly, because it
creates an opportunity for patient endurance and a deepening compassion.

Our special thanks to Mrs. Jo Layton and daughters, Deb, Peggy, Cammi and Renata who cleaned inside & outside of the church stained glass windows in time for Advent. Mrs. Layton is one of our many unsung heroes who clean the church and does many behind the scene volunteer duties.
Our church is cleaned by four teams of church volunteers every month. Please offer your thanks to all the volunteers or better yet offer them a helping hand. Call the parish office to volunteer 1-2 hours per month by joining one of the weekly cleaning crews or add your name to list of substitute volunteers. Cleaning the House of the Lord is a gift to the parish that benefits everyone.
