A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parishioners:

We reach a moment of transition, one year out, a new year in.  Times like this remind us of the fact that we are part of a cycle of growth and change.  The image of an old man going out and a baby coming in is a hopeful image.  “Father Time” offers another positive perspective on the ebb and flow of our lives.  Time is a healer.  Time frees us from past mistakes.  Time opens us to new adventures.

As we look backwards on all that 2007 has meant, we also look forwards to all that 2008 will bring.  We give thanks for all that has been, good and bad.  It has brought us to this day.  We reach out in hope toward all that will be, trusting in the Providence of the Good God.

Know that you are among the “old acquaintances” that will never be forgotten.  I hold you in my heart.  I am grateful to God for all that we have shared as we reach the mark of 12 years; I look forward to all that God will bring about for all of us in the years to come.

Te Deum: You are God: We Praise You

You are God: we praise you;

You are the Lord: we acclaim you;

You are the eternal Father:

All creation worships you.

To you all angels, all the powers of heaven,

Cherubim and Seraphim, sing in endless praise:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

The glorious company of apostles praise you.

The noble fellowship of prophets praise you.

The white-robed army of martyrs praise you.

Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you:

Father, of majesty unbounded,

your true and only Son, worthy of all worship,

and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.

You, Christ, are the king of glory,

the eternal Son of the Father.

When you became man to set us free

you did not spurn the Virgin’s womb.

You overcame the sting of death,

and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.

You are seated at God’s right hand in glory.

We believe that you will come, and be our judge.

Come then, Lord, and help your people,

bought with the price of your own blood,

and bring us with your saints

to glory everlasting.

V. Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance.

R. --Govern and uphold them now and always.

V.  Day by day we bless you.

R. --We praise your name for ever.

V. Keep us today, Lord, from all sin.

R. --Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.

V. Lord, show us your love and mercy;

R. --for we put our trust in you.

V. In you, Lord, is our hope:

R. --and we shall never hope in vain.

A partial indulgence is granted the Christian faithful who recite the hymn, Te Deum, as an act of thanksgiving.  The indulgence will be a plenary one if this hymn is publicly recited on the last day of the year.

DID YOU KNOW that the Song Auld Lang Syne – literally “old long since” [which, according to Wikipedia, might better be translated as “old long ago”, “times gone by”, or “days gone by] comes from a Poem by the Poet Robert Burns?

There are several verses in the poem that speak of the journey walked together by those who are sharing a mug.  The minimalist translation offered to this Scottish poem is as follows:

1.  Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot, and auld lang syne?

CHORUS: For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne,

we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne.

2.  And surely you’ll get your pint mug!  And surely I’ll get mine!
And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet, for auld lang syne.

3.  We two have run about the slopes, and picked the daisies fine;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot, since auld lang syne.

4  We two have paddled in the stream, from morning sun ’till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared since auld lang syne.

5.  And there’s a hand my trusty friend! And give a hand’ thine!
And we’ll take a right good-will toast, for auld lang syne.

The Poem invites us to pay attention to the present moment and the capacity we have to embrace what it offers in the face of the passage of time.  If we do this, old acquaintance will not be forgotten.

What we have learned together: We can truly be grateful even for experiences that we have shared that are painful.  These are the truest of experiences, because we meet them with our real emotions and at the very limits of our human nature.  If we survive them, we prove we are stronger than circumstances.  If we learn from them, we possess a wisdom that no one can ever take from us.  If we are together in some way after them, we know that there is a Higher Power at work among us, holding us together.

Dear Father Hayes,

We have received from the Mission Office in Columbus your parish’s gift of $1,200.51.  We thank you and your parishioners for this generous response to Father Les Schmidt’s appeal on behalf of Glenmary Home Missioners.  This financial support is deeply appreciated and will assist us in our efforts to spread the Gospel message in the mission areas of our own country.

We are indeed very grateful for your financial gifts to Glenmary, but I cannot stress enough how important the gift of prayer is to our missionary efforts.  So I ask for your continued prayers for our missioners and for the people we are serving.

I also request your prayer for missionary vocations, asking that the Lord provide the “laborers for the harvest.” This year Glenmary is blessed with 16 men in various stages of formation-the larges number that we have had in many years.  Please keep all these men in your prayers.

In turn, it is our privilege to pray for you and your ministry.  May God bless you.

Sincerely in Christ,

Father Dominic R. Duggins

First Vice President

Director of Development

Choose Life… “The Old and New Testaments are filled with … passages extolling children as gift and blessing.  It is disheartening, therefore, to see how far our culture has diverged from that view. …There was no confusion [in the story of Mary and Elizabeth] as to what and who nested under their mothers’ hearts.  Yet, 2,000 years later, many well-educated people do not know-or claim they do not know-the truth about human life before birth.” Cardinal Justin Rigali of Philadelphia, Southern Cross, 10/11/07
